Saint Daniel Comboni
Daniel Comboni was the first bishop of Central Africa. He mentioned that he wanted the ‘black pearl’ of Africa to be set into the crown of the Church. The rich cultural traditions of Africa can today find their way to the world through the establishment of the Church. Comboni’s greatest achievement in his time was to make the needs of Africa known to the Church. He wanted the voice of those held in slavery to be heard by the whole world. This desire is continued by the Comboni Missionaries today.
Bishop Daniel Comboni was proclaimed a Saint on 5 October 2003 by Pope John Paul II and is venerated as the founder of the Church in Sudan.
